REQUIREMENTS: A primary school in Berlin expressed a need for curtains to temporarily darken the windows. An important aspect was the need for blackouts for theatre performances and that the smoke vents must be kept clear, which is ensured by deliberately leaving gaps in the curtains.

IMPLEMENTATION: The project was implemented in a multi-purpose room with a small theater stage within the school. The curtains, which were made in a size of about 2-3 meters wide and 3.30 meters high, not only serve to darken the room, but also significantly improve the room acoustics. By installing the curtains, the reverberation times were reduced, which contributes to more pleasant acoustics in the room.

The curtain, made of dark red velvet and Trevira CS, is not only a visual highlight, but also functional and safe, as it is permanently flame-retardant.

ADVANTAGES

  • DARKNESS: The curtains allow flexible use of the room by providing sufficient darkening when required.
  • IMPROVED ROOM ACOUSTICS: By installing the curtains, the reverberation times (echo) in the room were reduced, which significantly improved the acoustics.
  • KEEPING THE SMOKE OUTLETS CLEAR: Despite the complete blackout, safety is guaranteed because the smoke vents are kept clear by targeted gaps in the curtains.
  • HIDDEN STORAGE AREA: An additional benefit is that a storage area can be cleverly concealed with one of the curtains, contributing to a neater look.

SUMMARY: The tailor-made curtains not only meet the functional requirements of blackout and security, but also contribute to improved room acoustics. This project shows how targeted solutions can improve multi-purpose rooms in schools functionally and aesthetically.
