In March 2026, we at Rabenring had the opportunity to complete a special order for Frontsound Leipzig: custom-made podium skirts made of grey blackout fabric SUNSET with sewn-in box pleats for the presentation of BMW Leipzig as part of the Retail Next 2026 concept.
The skirts were attached below the stage and provided a clean, professional appearance for the entire stage setup.
The simple yet high-quality grey panels emphasized the professional character of the event without being distracting. As usual, they were attached with Velcro.
What are podium skirts?
Podium skirts – also known as stage skirts or skirting – are textile coverings that hide the area beneath stages, platforms, or tables. They conceal technology, cables, speakers, and other structures that should not be visible to the audience. At the same time, they give the stage a uniform, high-quality appearance – an essential detail for professional events.
Smooth or pleated?
There are different variants for the design of podium skirts:
Smooth podium skirts
Smooth skirts are mounted tautly and without drapes. They appear modern, clean, and technical – ideal for corporate events, product presentations, trade fairs, but also for simple coverings of stages or DJ booths where a factual, contemporary design is desired.
Pleated podium skirts
Pleated skirts – whether with even box pleats, gathers, or soft drapes – appear more elegant and festive. They are particularly suitable for galas, theatre performances, weddings, and classical stage productions where a representative atmosphere is desired. Skirts are also suitable for covering tables or buffet tables at conferences and press conferences.
Playful podium skirts with trimmings and colour
For particularly festive or historically themed stages, podium skirts can also be very elaborate and decorative. With trimmings – i.e. braids, fringes, tassels and decorative ribbons – as well as multicoloured fabrics or embroidered ornaments, coverings are created that become an eye-catcher themselves. Such designs are often found in classical theatres, opera houses or at historical festivals, where the stage covering is part of the overall stage design.
Materials at a glance
The choice of material influences both the appearance and the handling and durability of the skirt:
- Molton (cotton/polyester): The classic in the event sector. Flame-retardant, light-absorbing, easy-care and available in many colours. Ideal for stages and events of all kinds.
- Velvet: Velvety surface with an elegant appearance. Particularly popular for theatres, concerts and high-quality events.
- Trevira CS: Flame-retardant polyester fabric specially developed for use in public spaces and event venues. Easy-care and dimensionally stable.
- Satin / Duchesse: Shiny surface for festive occasions such as galas or weddings.
- Jute / Natural fabrics: For rustic or nature-oriented event concepts.
